Does your child struggle with reading, writing or language?

Every child deserves the chance to reach their potential. Pelican Learning offers affordable, research-based assessments and specialist support to help families in Warrnambool and across Australia understand their child's learning needs — and take confident next steps.

Does this sound familiar?

Children develop at different rates. But some signs can indicate a child is finding learning harder than expected — and that early support could make a real difference.

  • Avoids reading aloud or becomes upset when asked to read

  • Struggles to blend sounds or recognise common words

  • Mixes up letters or words that look or sound similar

  • Has limited vocabulary or frequently makes grammar errors

  • Finds it hard to follow multi-step instructions

  • Is bright and capable in some areas, but significantly behind in reading or writing

  • Has been told they're 'not trying hard enough' — but you know that's not the whole story

If any of these feel familiar, you're not alone — and there is clarity to be found.

Why Pelican Learning?

"A silly old bird is the pelican, his beak holds more than his belly can!"

Learning is the same. Cognitive Load Theory tells us that the brain can only 'swallow' a limited feed of concepts at once. New knowledge needs to be layered carefully onto what's already secure. Too little challenge and no nutrients are delivered. Too much at once and the load overwhelms — nothing is swallowed.

Good teaching means watching closely, observing what the student has actually learned, and offering the next small bite at exactly the right moment. Not a beak-full. One bite at a time.

That's the heart of everything we do at Pelican Learning. It's the science of learning.
