Language & Literacy Screener

A clear first answer — and a practical next step, whatever that turns out to be.

  • It gives families clear evidence to take to an Educational Psychologist or SPeLD specialist in their state or territory.

  • It gives schools rich, actionable detail to begin planning intervention straight away — without waiting for a formal diagnosis.

  • It tells you whether a fuller Pelican Learning assessment is the right next step for your family.

Who is it for?

Children aged 5–18. Particularly useful if you have early concerns, want a low-cost starting point, need something to take to your child's school, or want to get the ball rolling while waiting for a specialist appointment.

What’s involved?

A session of approximately 30–45 minutes, conducted in-person or via a secure online platform.

What do you receive?

A written summary of findings indicating whether a language or literacy disorder is highly probable, including enough detail for schools to begin intervention planning and for families to pursue specialist referral with confidence.

Full assessment

Research-grade answers — with a report you can actually use.

What is it?

A comprehensive assessment of your child's language and literacy skills using two of the most accurate educational assessment tools available: DYMOND™ and TILLS (Test of Integrated Language and Literacy Skills). Together, these tools can identify indicators of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and other language and literacy difficulties with exceptional accuracy.

Please note: as a specialist educator, I provide educational assessments and detailed findings — not a formal psychological diagnosis. Where a formal diagnosis is needed (for example, for NDIS access or specialist referral), I will recommend the appropriate pathway and can help you understand what that involves.

About the tools

  • DYMOND™ is a norm-referenced dynamic assessment for children aged 5–14. It identifies indicators of DLD and dyslexia with 95% sensitivity and 91% specificity — including in children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This is my preferred assessment for children aged 14 and under.

  • TILLS is a comprehensive assessment of language and literacy for students aged 6–18, covering listening, reading, writing, speaking and language memory. I prefer this assessment for young people aged 14 and over.

Generally, I only use one of these assessments. However, both can be used to provide a complete picture from Prep through to Year 12.

Who is it for?

Children and young people aged 5–18. It’s especially useful if a screener has flagged concerns, your child has been struggling for some time, or you want a detailed report to share with a school, GP or specialist.

What do you receive?

  • A detailed written report with explanations of scores and an interpretation of your child's learning profile based on the assessment data; and also the parent and teacher input you provide.

  • Identification of indicators for specific learning difficulties (dyslexia and dysgraphia) where present; and Developmental Languagae Disorder (DLD).

  • Practical recommendations for home and school

  • A personal debrief to walk through the results together in plain language

  • Guidance on next steps, including referrals where a formal psychological diagnosis may be beneficial

Story Champs Intervention

Evidence-based language intervention for children with Developmental Language Disorder.

What is it?

Story Champs is an evidence-based intervention program designed to build vocabulary, narrative skills and language comprehension in children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). It works by teaching children to retell and generate stories using a structured framework, building the language foundations that underpin reading and writing success.

Who is it for?

Children who have been identified as having DLD or significant language difficulties, typically following a screener or full assessment. Sessions are available for individual children or small groups.

What’s involved?

Regular sessions (frequency and duration tailored to the child's needs), conducted in-person in Warrnambool or online. I work closely with families and schools to ensure the approach is consistent across settings.
